West Angelas Deposit C&D Project Rio Tinto
Project Overview
As part of their ‘Mine of the Future’ program, Rio Tinto expanded their West Angelas mine in the Pilbara to sustain increased iron ore production. The West Angelas Deposit C&D (WADCD) expansion was the first to be deployed with transforming technologies, such as autonomous haulage, autonomous drilling and remote controlling of mining operations.
After working with Rio Tinto on other projects, CEO and Founder Fin English was approached to provide on-site health and emergency support to the mine in 2018, and Citadel Medical was born.
Our role on-site
Located in the Hamersley Range mountainous region in East Pilbara, roughly 110km northwest of Newman, the WADCD project required emergency response services to keep the team safe in their isolated location. In such a remote site, healthcare quality can make all the difference when an incident or injury occurs. We provided a range of industry-leading medical practices and techniques alongside cutting-edge technology and equipment during this project.
The registered paramedics that were employed on this project had over 15 years of experience and specialised in remote locations. As part of our on-site health and emergency support offering, they completed a minimum of 30 hours of continual professional development per year and four days of training and assessment to keep their skills up to date. In addition, site paramedics had access to our occupational doctors at all times to ensure the best patient care. To ensure the team working on-site developed an understanding of how to support each other's wellbeing, we also delivered mental health first aid training programs.
The Citadel Medical impact
Our approach to on-site health and emergency support helps improve employees' health and wellbeing while reducing risk, injuries and incidents on site. An average of 14% of WADCD personnel attended our on-site clinic every week to take care of their wellbeing. At the conclusion of the project in February 2022, our partnership resulted in no work-related lost-time injuries (LTI’s) on-site for the duration of our contract.
